Ford has issued a safety recall for nearly 9,000 of its new 2024 Mustang sports cars due to a manufacturing defect that could lead to a fire. The safety campaign targets models equipped with a manual transmission, where a critical bolt may be loose or missing, creating a risk of fluid leaks and a sudden loss of vehicle control.
The recall population includes 8,926 vehicles, specifically the V8-powered Mustang GT and high-performance Dark Horse models. These cars are part of the all-new “S650” generation that recently launched. According to a safety report submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue stems from a bolt that fastens the clutch pressure line to the transmission. An investigation found this component may not have been properly torqued during the assembly process.
Fire Hazard and Loss of Power Explained
The primary danger for drivers is the potential for an engine compartment fire. If the clutch line detaches, it can spray flammable hydraulic fluid directly onto hot engine and exhaust surfaces, which could cause the fluid to ignite. This presents a serious safety risk whether the car is moving or parked.
Beyond the fire risk, the defect directly impacts the car’s drivability. A loss of hydraulic fluid will cause the clutch system to fail, making it impossible for the driver to shift gears. This could result in a loss of motive power, as the driver would be unable to engage the transmission. Such an event could increase the risk of a crash, especially in heavy traffic.
Ford has outlined a clear solution for affected owners, which will be performed free of charge. Dealership technicians will inspect the clutch line connection. If the bolt is present but loose, it will be tightened to the correct factory specification. If the bolt is missing or the line is damaged, the dealer will replace the entire clutch pressure line assembly. The company noted in its filing that it is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this condition.
Owners of a 2024 Mustang with a manual transmission should pay close attention to any unusual clutch pedal behavior or signs of fluid leaking beneath the car. Ford is expected to begin notifying owners by mail starting June 17, 2024. What to watch next will be the efficiency of the recall process and whether any further quality control issues emerge for the new-generation Mustang.
