Ford has issued a safety recall for 8,161 of its 2024 Mustang models equipped with a manual transmission. The action addresses a loose bolt that can cause a hydraulic fluid leak from the clutch system. This defect could prevent drivers from shifting gears, potentially leading to a loss of motive power while the vehicle is in motion.
The problem originates from an improperly tightened bolt securing the clutch pressure line. If this fastener is loose, it can allow brake and clutch fluid to escape from the closed hydraulic system. A progressive loss of fluid will reduce the pressure needed to operate the clutch, making it inoperable. Drivers may find they are unable to select a gear or that the vehicle will not move from a stop.
According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall population includes specific 2024 Mustang coupes and convertibles fitted with the six-speed manual gearbox. Ford’s investigation began after it identified a trend in warranty claims related to fluid leaks and poor clutch pedal performance. The inquiry traced the root cause to an assembly process issue where the clutch line’s retaining bolt may not have been torqued to specification. Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this condition.
To resolve the issue, Ford will notify owners to bring their vehicles to a dealership for a free inspection and repair. Technicians will inspect the clutch pressure line bolt and tighten it to the correct torque setting. If the inspection reveals any damage to the line itself from the loose connection, the component will be replaced entirely, the company stated in its defect report.
What Mustang Owners Should Do
Owners of a 2024 manual-transmission Mustang should be alert for potential symptoms. These include a soft or unresponsive clutch pedal, visible fluid leaks under the front of the vehicle, or difficulty shifting gears. Ignoring these warning signs could increase the risk of the clutch failing completely. Ford plans to begin mailing official notification letters to owners of the recalled vehicles in June 2024. Owners can also contact their local Ford dealer or use NHTSA’s website with their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to check for inclusion in this recall, which is listed as campaign number 24V354.
What to watch next is the official start date for these owner notifications and how quickly dealerships can perform the simple, but critical, repair. This action is separate from other recent recalls involving the 2024 Mustang’s instrument panel cluster and body control module, highlighting early production challenges for the new-generation sports car.
